Finite element analysis reveals stress triaxiality and Lode angle evolution across varied steel coupon geometries, suggesting optimal specimen configurations for fracture modeling.
This study aims to provide a systematic understanding of stress and strain states developing inside small-scale steel coupon specimens with various geometries, toward the development of a steel fracture model applicable to a wide range of stress states. Finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the evolution of stress and strain states within the specimens, with particular attention to the evolution of stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter up to fracture. The results of this study offer useful insights for selecting appropriate specimen geometries in future material testing programs aimed at the development of steel fracture models.
