A detailed description of a low-energy (25-500 eV) alkali-ion gun is reported. Performances are compared with computer-aided design and theory. Using a 7 Li-ion emitter currents up to 10 -5 A at 500 eV ion energy were obtained. The angular spread was 8 degrees (FWHM) at an ion energy of 25 eV.
