Neutral beam injection in the START spherical tokamak induces L to H mode transitions in double null divertor configurations. The behaviour of the edge poloidal velocity, electron temperature and density, and edge neutral density during the transition are examined. The region encompassing the thermal barrier is investigated with a variety of diagnostics including Doppler spectrometry, Thomson scattering, a Balmer D α camera and magnetics.
