Summary Melosira distant var. blelhamensis n. var. is described. This has only been found in Post‐glacial deposits. The hitherto uncertain identity of a large Melosira, common in the Late‐glacial and early Post‐glacial lake deposits of the English Lake District, is discussed and it is suggested that its correct name is M. teres Brun.
