The basic requirements of a satisfactory theory of drafting are analysed, and a theory is presented which satisfies these requirements and gives a full description of fibre motion in steady drafting. The theory is checked against the available experimental evidence, including new evidence presented by Sharp in an accompanying paper∗. The effects of alterations of draft, ratch, friction, etc., on fibre motion are investigated for the case of fibres of uniform length. The theory provides the necessary foundation for a subsequent examination (cf. accompanying paper by Medley, McCormick and Broady∗) of periodic and non-periodic irregularities associated with drafting.
