Certain enzymes have dual functions having both catalytic and signaling activities. To this group can now be added plant hexokinases, as [Frommer and colleagues][1] discuss in their Perspective. Elegant work with Arabidopsis mutants reveals that plant hexokinases not only phosphorylate glucose but also sense glucose levels and participate in the glucose signaling pathway.
