Synopsis From one‐fourth to one‐half of the moisture loss from soybean plots was due to evaporation directly from the soil surface, depending on the nature of the season and the plant population. Soybeans used large amounts of moisture stored in the lower part of the rooting zone. Planting in 20‐inch rows increased yields of soybeans, especially where the soil surface was left open to evaporation.
