The relationship between shell thickness and ultrasonic measurements was established experimentally using water as the transmission medium for the ultrasonic energy. The ultrasonic readings were significantly correlated with shell thickness (r = 0.59 and 0.74). The prediction of shell thickness was not sufficiently precise, but the results indicated that the method has potential for further development. The ultrasonic technique predicted mean shell thickness of an egg better than the thickness at a single point.
