Seedlings of Vicia faba were used as a radiobiological test system to measure the OER for protracted low dose-rate exposures to radium γ rays, and to the mixed neutron γ-ray emission from 252Cf. For radium at a dose-rate of 46·9 rads/hour the OER was found to be 2·02; for californium at a dose-rate of 16·02 rads/hour the OER was 1·66. The lowering of OER which would result from replacing radium with 252Cf for interstitial and intracavitary radiotherapy techniques would be less dramatic than the change of OER that would result from replacing telecobalt units with 14 MeV neutron generators for beam therapy.
