SUMMARY The prevalence of serum antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii was determined in samples of the stray cat population from 2 counties in central California and in a limited number of cats and dogs admitted as patients to 2 animal hospitals. The prevalence of Toxoplasma antibodies among veterinarians was compared with the prevalence among persons in other vocations. The prevalence of Toxoplasma antibodies in the stray cat population was 14%. Prevalence was 25% in cats and 15% in dogs from animal hospitals. Serologic evidence of exposure to Toxoplasma was about the same among veterinarians (43.7%) as among nonveterinarians (44.0%) that were tested. Using serum from 96 cats, there was 95% agreement between the microtiter indirect hemagglutination-antibody (iha) test and the indirect fluorescent-antibody (ifa) test.
