Complex polycyclic ring systems related to those of many natural products can be prepared from readily accessible starting materials by novel sequential reactions promoted by either SmI2 or tetrathiafulvalene. Combinations of anionic and radical steps are possible, as in, for example, the SmI2-promoted transformation of 1 into 2 with twofold cyclization, which was described by Molander and Harris.
