THIS conference on "Mathematics in the Medical Sciences" was called because medical scientists have begun to ask questions that entail the development of new mathematical theory and the application of more complex mathematical reasoning than has been the case in the past. Also, the effective use of new instruments now becoming available to medicine demands an understanding of their underlying physical theory and its mathematical application.
