A simple model is presented to predict the branching ratio into heavy-flavored ³S₁ and ¹S₀ mesons in heavy-quark fragmentation. The ratio depends on the light-quark-to-heavy-quark mass ratio and varies as a function of the variable z (=E_hadron/Ebeam). The theoretical predictions will be most decisively tested in the z dependence of the ³S₁{/}¹S₀ ratio and the z dependence of the D*{→}D{π} decay-angular distribution d{Γ}/d{Ω}{∝}1+{α}(z) cos²theta in the D* rest frame, where theta is measured from the D* laboratory momentum.
