Innovative bonding technology is key for system integration of photovoltaic modules in façade and roofing systems. The technology transfer from established bonding solutions such as façade and roofing systems allows combining aesthetic appearance, functionality such as weather protection, shading, insulation and the functional benefits of PV-modules as part of a building envelope. Building integrated PV (BIPV) requires specific approaches regarding design and evaluation. To guarantee a reliable construction over decades, different standards of structural bonding have to be considered and combined reasonably with the existing PV standards. Prefabricated modules, innovative mounting systems and efficient manufacturing processes allow cost savings and could partly compensate the immanent disadvantages of BIPV such as vertical module orientation in comparison to “classic” non-integrated rooftop systems.
