The C6H5+ ion obtained from toluene by electron impact is not formed simply by cleavage of the phenylmethyl bond, as has been assumed, and may not be a phenyl ion at all. The apparent identity of this ion with the C6H5+ ion derived from benzene leads to the inference that the latter, also, may not be a phenyl ion.
