A pyridyl functionalised tetraphenylethylene (Py-TPE) for ratiometric fluorescent detection of intracellular pH values is reported; the Py-TPE fluorescent probe can be used for H + sensing in organic solvents (CHCl 3 , DMF and MeOH).
