Abslroct-A series of 4-substituted ethyl 2-methoxy-6-methyl-1,4-dihydropyrimidine-5-carboxylates has been synthesized and was successfblly aromatized to the corresponding pyrimidines with various oxidizing reagents.0-Demethylation of such pyrimidines provides a simple route to pyrimidinone derivatives which are otherwise difficult to obtain.Hantzsch 1,4-dihydropyridines of the nifedipine-type (DHPs, e.g 1) belong to the most studied class of calcium antagonists used in the clinical treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, or angor.Despite intensive research efforts and the commercial success o f ~H P s ; these types of calcium channel modulators generally exhibit a rather short duration of antihypertensive activity, thus requiring frequent administrations.In the past years interest has focused on structurally closely related compounds such as
