The paper identifies the essential physical ingredients of tribological systems. Using a simple model incorporating surface roughness and a surface film, the general behavior of both solid and lubricated films may be anticipated. Nonetheless, several important gaps in our physical knowledge of contacts are identified. Further work in these areas would greatly enhance the concepts presented in this paper.
