We describe a compact, low-cost cryogenic laser head suitable for use with fragile laser crystals which must be operated at low temperatures. Our design provides maximum mechanical stability and permits easy interchange of optical components in the laser cavity. One of our lasers was operated over a 1-year test period, and has survived more than 150 thermal cycles and 1000 hours of lasing without failure.
