The invariants of the tensor field in a magneto-electric medium are formulated and the results are used to obtain an expression relating the magneto-electric susceptibility to the parameter, α, which connects the experimentally measurable fields. It is found that there is a critical value of magneto-electric susceptibility that may not be exceeded. The influence of the magneto-electric effect upon the apparent permittivity and permeability of the medium is also investigated.
