Two hundred and thirty-seven patients who had lower limb amputations have been reviewed. The clinical course to amputation, the level of the amputation, the complication rates of a particular amputation and the techniques of amputation have been studied and are discussed. The differences between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with peripheral vascular disease are examined. The place of below-knee amputation in the rehabilitation of a patient is considered, and a change in attitude to this procedure is noted.
