Like many people, pilgrims have been traveling to high altitude for ages. Unlike other sojourners to high altitude, however, pilgrims in South Asia are often less aware of the dangers of traveling to high altitude. They are also often unaware of the simple medications to be taken while traveling and the importance of the rate of ascent at high altitude. Often they have preexisting co-morbidities and are not well prepared. Much needs to be done to make them fully aware of the dangers of the journey they are about to undertake so that they can better prepare themselves.
