The Sommerfield factors of the unbound states of an exciton in a quantum well structure are determined using a method that combines the finite-difference method with the technique of continued fractions. They are shown to give rise to absorption in the continuum different from that for a two-dimensional exciton. The dependence on the well width is also considered. The results reported are useful in the interpretation of recently measured absorption coefficients.
