An experimental AIDS vaccine tested in Thai heroin users has failed to stop the spread of HIV. It's the second time the vaccine, a genetically engineered version of the HIV surface protein gp120 developed by VaxGen of Brisbane, California, has proven ineffective in an efficacy trial. But although gp120 clearly does not work by itself, an ambitious new study in Thailand has just started to assess whether it might provide an effective boost to another AIDS vaccine.
