The inability to obtain genetic recombinants from mixed infection with closely related strains of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) (Granoff, 1959a; 1961) is in marked contrast to the ease with which genetic recombination has been demonstrated among a variety of influenza strains (Burnet, 1960; Simpson and Hirst, 1961; Hirst, 1962). We will, therefore, only briefly note some of the experiments that have been carried out in attempts to gain evidence for genetic recombination with NDV and then turn our attention to studies of heterozygosis and phenotypic mixing.
