This study examines the fish diversity of the Jinari River and assesses the impact of ustaad (cypermethrin 10% EC) and ichthyotoxic plant usage on the aquatic ecosystem. Through extensive field surveys, a rich diversity of fish was documented, indicating the ecological significance of the river. Additionally, our observations revealed widespread poison fishing practices utilizing ustaad and ichthyotoxic plants, significantly threatening fish populations and ecosystem integrity. Furthermore, fingerlings’ morality and a reduction in surface insects suggested potential population decline and ecological disturbances. Although this study did not investigate the direct effects of ichthyotoxic plants, our findings suggest a parallel between ichthyotoxic plant-based fishing and ustaad contamination in their impact on aquatic biodiversity. This study underscores the urgent need for further research to comprehensively assess the effects of ichthyotoxic plants on aquatic ecosystems and highlights the importance of implementing conservation measures to safeguard the ecological health of River Jinari.
