The synthesis of a bis‐homo‐gramicidin S, cyclo‐(Val‐Lys‐Leu‐Phe‐Pro)2, 2HCl, H2O (L‐L‐L‐D‐L)2 is described. The product differs from gramicidin S in that the two residues of L‐ornithine are replaced by residues of L‐lysine. This change implies no significant loss of antibacterial properties. The antibiotic activity of gramicidine S is thus not due to the presence of the uncommon amino acid L‐ornithine.
