A one-dimensional model of the double shock structure in an inviscid, perfectly conducting fluid is presented. A magnetic field parallel to the discontinuity surfaces is included in the analysis. The range of ambient and driver gas parameters for which a double shock is possible is determined, and in particular, the effect of the magnetic field on these critical curves is examined. Theoretical shock profiles for typical solar wind conditions are discussed. Mariner 2 data for the high velocity stream of October 7–8, 1962, are compared with the results of the one-dimensional model. We show that the peak in the density should precede the peak in the magnetic field strength. This feature is in agreement with Mariner 2 data. The model yields values of temperature and pressure in the shocked gases that are higher than observed.
