Several problems encountered when a gas chromatographic column, coupled to a mass spectrometer, is working at reduced outlet pressure (vacuum) are discussed. It is shown how the retention time can be calculated from data easily obtained on a conventional chromatograph. The pressure profile along the column and its influence on the efficiency is discussed as well as the relationship between column inlet pressure and the ion source pressure.
