Summary The morphology and flavonoid chemistry of synthetic F1, first generation backcross, and F2 hybrids involving two varieties of Coreopsis mutica DC. were studied. The F1 hybrids are variable in certain morphological features, particularly with respect to characteristics of the leaves. By contrast, there is little variation in the flavonoid components of these plants. First generation backcross hybrids fall within the range of variation of the recurrent parent, but retain certain compounds which are characteristic of the non‐recurrent parent. The F2 hybrid plants are quite variable in their flavonoid components. The results of these greenhouse studies are related to observations of suspected natural hybridization and introgression.
