The interaction of recoil‐free γ‐radiation of a 57Co Mössbauer source with a piezo electrically excited X‐cut quartz crystal is investigated. The experiments are performed in the direct beam and in the diffracted beam of the (1120) Bragg reflection. In both geometries we applied time‐resolved correlation experiments to analyze the γ‐quantum beats due to phonon energy transfers. A consistent theoretical explanation of the quantum beats is proposed.
