The effects of solute hydrogen on the electron irradiation damage of high-purity aluminium have been studied by means of a transmission electron microscope. Al-H alloys exhibited sub-threshold radiation damage in the form of interstitial loops and voids, while pure Al did not exhibit any evidence of sub-threshold damage. In the Al-H alloys, damage was observed with electron energies as low as 80 keV. The damage rates were qualitatively studied as a function of beam direction, H concentration and temperature. The results are consistent with an indirect energy transfer mechanism via the H interstitial intermediary.
