The relative magnitudes of laser-induced fluorescence at H alpha , and H beta when a hydrogen plasma is pumped at the H alpha transition have been measured as a function of electron density in a small tokamak plasma. The measurements differ, by a small but significant amount, from the predictions of a collisional radiative model. A range of possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.
