Moisture interaction with basalt–carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites is analyzed. Infrared spectroscopy characterizes interactions between the matrix and the filler during composite formation. The Langmuir model, which partitions absorbed moisture into mobile and bound fractions, adequately describes the kinetics of moisture uptake in these materials, as confirmed by gravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Mechanisms by which moisture affects mechanical properties are discussed.
