In. this study of the duration of the egg + larval and pupal periods of individual animals, the duration of the larval period was on the average the same in both sexes, and the pupal period was on the average 7.5 hours longer in the males. Both larval and pupal period were significantly negatively correlated with weight. The diurnal rhythm in emergence strongly influences the duration of the pupal period. Hence the length of this period as well as the difference between the sexes in this respect depends partly upon the moment of puparium formation, which is itself not influenced by the diurnal rhythm. Under more optimal conditions the moment of puparium formation will be largely determined by the time of oviposition. It is argued that for the comparison of results of experiments on duration of development it is important to report the exact time of oviposition, as non‐agreement of these results may be partly or even wholly due to different oviposition periods. Correlation coefficients and partial correlation coefficients have been calculated for the correlations between the durations of the egg + larval period (x), the pupal period (y), and weight (z), It was found that the large significant positive correlation between x and y was reduced to almost zero by the elimination of the effects of z, while on the other hand, the negative correlations between x and z, and y and z were not much influenced by the elimination of the effects of y and x respectively. It is concluded that characteristics which determine weight appear to have a strong influence on the duration of the egg + larva] and pupal period. Zusammenfassung ÜBER DIE BEZIEHUNGEN ZWISCHEN DER DAUER DES LARVENSTADIUMS UND DES PUPPENSTADIUMS, DEM GEWICHT UND DER TAGESRHYTHMIK IN DER SCHLUPFPERIODIK VON DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER 1.
