The interatomic force constants in a crystal can be obtained experimentally by measuring both the frequency and a corresponding eigenvector of each phonon mode. The measurement of the double differential cross section does not generally suffice to determine the eigenvector unambiguously. It is shown that by orienting the crystal near a Bragg position it is possible to obtain additional information on the eigenvector. An experimental procedure is proposed which should yield unambiguous values for the force constants.
