We have previously reported the isolation and characterization of a soil microorganism, tentatively designated Achromobacter MS, capable of growing on trimethylsulfonium (TMS) chloride as its sole source of carbon. During growth on TMS, dimethyl sulfide is formed while the remaining methyl group is incorporated into cell material. We report in this communication on the formation of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid from TMS by a partially purified enzyme from this organism according to the following equation.
