An experimental study of a plasma, in which the relative negative ion fraction could be varied over a large range was carried out to compare Langmuir probe measurements with data obtained by photodetachment. Both plane and cylindrical probes are considered. The values of the negative ion fraction obtained from the probe measurements are close to those measured by laser photodetachment only when the negative ion density exceeds the electron density. For a lower negative ion density the large relative error of the probe measurements leads to highly undefined values of the negative ion fraction compared with the values obtained by photodetachment.
