Inhaled anesthetics (sevoflurane, isoflurane, and desflurane) prolong the QT interval, though specific quantitative effects were not reported in this letter.
This letter highlights the need for further clinical studies to fully understand the arrhythmogenic properties of inhaled anesthetics like desflurane.
In Response: We appreciate Dr. Venkatesan's acknowledgment of our work (1). QT interval prolongation is associated with life-threatening arrhythmias. Inhaled anesthetics prolong the QT interval (2) and can induce life-threatening arrhythmias in patients with prolonged QT interval (3). We studied the effects of three inhaled anesthetics (sevoflurane, isoflurane, and desflurane) on QT interval, QTc interval, QT dispersion, and QTc dispersion (4). At the time we were unaware of any previous studies on the effect of desflurane on QT interval and were unaware of the continuing work by Owczuk et al. (5). In our view, further clinical studies are needed to fully understand the arrhythmogenic properties of inhaled anesthetics. Halil Yldrm (2006) conducted a letter in QT interval prolongation. Inhaled anesthetics (sevoflurane, isoflurane, and desflurane) was evaluated on QT interval, QTc interval, QT dispersion, and QTc dispersion. Inhaled anesthetics (sevoflurane, isoflurane, and desflurane) prolong the QT interval, though specific quantitative effects were not reported in this letter.
