Paleontological analysis reveals two new fossil crane fly species in Cenozoic European deposits, expanding the evolutionary and biogeographic record of prehistoric Tipulomorpha.
The paper presents the discovery of two new species of the genus Tipula (Diptera: Tipulomorpha). The new species are Tipula ( Tipula ) lukasiewiczi sp. nov. and Tipula ( Yamatotipula ) gentilinii sp. nov. The first is described from the marine Oligocene Menilite Formation of Poland. This finding represents the earliest evidence of dipterans in the Polish Oligocene and provides new data on the presence of the genus Tipula (Tipulomorpha, Tipuloidea, Tipulidae) in the northern Paratethys region. The second, new for knowledge species was described from the Upper Miocene deposite of Monte Castellaro (Marche, Central Italy). Detailed morphological analyses, including wing venation reconstructions, are provided. Furthermore, hypotheses regarding the palaeoenvironmental preferences in relation to the biogeographic distribution of the described taxa are proposed. These results contribute to the knowledge of Paleogene and Neogene Tipulomorpha.
