Critical analysis examines psychological dynamics in Marina Abramović’s Rhythm series, highlighting how rhythmic structures drive performance art.
This paper comments on Marina Abramović’s Rhythm series. The notions of rhythm and performance are introduced, and each performance is analyzed with rhythm as a controlling idea. It uses notions from Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis such as scopophilia, gaze, objet a and jouissance to interpret the performances, and suggests further investigation of other performances created by Abramović in which rhythm is a significant element.
