Neurophysiological study reveals weak coupling between scalp EEG variance and medial temporal lobe activity in epilepsy patients, suggesting limited surface detection of deep memory signals.
A frozen subject-level meso–macro test in nine epilepsy patients (DANDI 000574, 37 sessions). Neither primary pair passed a conjunctive sign-flip and time-shift rule after FDR correction: micro-LFP variance versus scalp-EEG variance (median subject r = 0.100, 35 sessions) and unfiltered MTL spike rate versus scalp-EEG variance (r = 0.062, 28 sessions). A time-shift-only signature on the LFP–EEG pair is reported as partial, not as a pass. The result does not weaken or pool with a companion mouse analysis.
