This paper presents an adaptive short-time compensation and reclosing technique for improving power system stability and reducing turbine-generator shaft torsional torques. The fundamental concept of the proposed technique is to interrupt unsymmetrical faults on "double-circuit" transmission lines using selective-pole switching. The transmission system is then balanced by switching on compensating capacitors in the interrupted phases. Adaptive reclosing is then applied to reclose the tripped phases and the compensating capacitors are switched off. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed technique are demonstrated through time-domain simulation studies on a test system using the EMTDC program.
