Key result
Social support was the most significant predictive factor for readmission among Thai patients with coronary artery disease, with higher support predicting fewer readmissions (beta -0.225, p<0.001).
Why the study?
Coronary artery disease carries high readmission rates that vary widely, and the impact of factors predicting readmission in Thailand remains unclear.
Does social support, depression, comorbidities, symptom severity, or quality of life predict readmission in Thai patients with coronary artery disease?
Cross-Sectional (n=321)

Social support is a significant predictor of hospital readmission in Thai patients with coronary artery disease, highlighting the need for social support interventions.
BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality with high readmission rates. Hospital readmissions for coronary artery disease contribute to rising healthcare costs and are a marker of quality of care. Despite this, prior studies have found that readmission rates vary widely. AIMS: This study aims to determine the impact of social support, depression, comorbidities, symptom severity, quality of life and readmission among coronary artery disease patients in Thailand. METHODS: A total of 321 coronary artery disease patients from tertiary care hospitals across all regions of Thailand were recruited for this study. Data were analysed using multiple regression analysis. Thus, social support was found to be the most significant predictive factor for readmission. CONCLUSIONS: Accordingly, when designing effective nursing interventions, nurses should promote social support interventions for coronary artery disease patients to improve the quality of care, decrease readmission rates and improve patients' quality of life.

Polsook et al. (2020) conducted a cross-sectional in Coronary artery disease (n=321). Social support vs. Lower social support was evaluated on Hospital readmission within 12 months of discharge (beta -0.225, 95% CI -0.042 to -0.014, p=<0.001). Social support was the most significant predictive factor for readmission among Thai patients with coronary artery disease, with higher support predicting fewer readmissions (beta -0.225, p<0.001).
