Substituents influence the polymerisation of lactams by their effects on the ring closure reaction in the equilibrium between cyclic monomer and polymer. The effects of substituents on the enthalpy of ring closure of caprolactam is discussed in terms of the change in gauche interactions and the configuration of the amide bond. The entropy of ring closure is also considered qualitatively. This simple theoretical approach gives reasonable agreement with the experimental results.
