Methods descending from the augmented planewave (APW) method are among the most accurate used in electronic structure calculations. Here several widely used schemes to linearise the secular equation are compiled. These are the linearised augmented planewave (LAPW) method with extensions of the basis set by localised orbitals and the so-called APW + lo method. Some examples highlight the advantages and shortcomings of different approaches.
