The motion of electrons in a semiconductor can be altered in several ways – for example, by using electric fields, magnetic fields or temperature gradients. Most present-day semiconductor devices use electric fields to accelerate, redirect or stop the electrons. The use of magnetic fields to control the motion of charge carriers could open up completely new areas of fundamental research, with possible applications in semiconductor physics.
