A theoretical investigation of the X‐ray stimulated spectra of N2/Ar has been made. The fine structure of the N2/Ar sideband is identified as the combined result of host‐lattice vibrations, an impurity induced local mode, and multiphonon processes. The width of the peaks is attributed to hindered rotations of the trapped molecule. The details of the matrix red shift are explained via Buckingham's formulation and the effects of hindered rotations.
