SUMMARYThe chemistry of the solvent conditioning step as used prior to the permanganate etching of PCB's is explained and the mechanism involved is detailed. The use of solubility parameters as a tool for formulating proper solvent blends for solvents/conditioners (”swellants”) is discussed. SEM pictures are presented to illustrate the influence of the solvent/conditioner step on surface morphology and adhesion.
