A latent gene(s) for male fertility has been detected in 'Cornerstone' chromosome 4A. Although this gene(s) is unable to effect fertility in 'Cornerstone' itself, it is able to do so in the presence of a male-fertility gene(s) in modified barley chromosome 4Hm. Furthermore, a dosage effect of this latent gene(s) is evident, as increases in male fertility are observed in plants possessing one modified barley chromosome 4Hm and zero, one, or two doses of 'Cornerstone' chromosome 4A. The Y line, involving 'Cornerstone' and a single barley chromosome 4Hm, is almost as fertile as euploid wheat.
